US Youth Soccer adds to the organization’s
educational library with the addition of volumes one and two of The Novice
Coach DVD.
The DVDs, designed for coaches
that are new to coaching youth players regardless of previous experience, are
available online at the
US Youth Soccer Store.
After the hugely
successful Novice Coach: An Introduction to Coaching Youth Soccer for Under-6
through Under-10 players released in 2005, US Youth Soccer has improved and
expanded the collection to create the new two volume Novice Coach series. Each
volume contains age-appropriate activities and coaching education.
The new DVDs will
provide 25 technical segments and information about team
management and coaching logistics, in addition to skills and
activities. Sam Snow, Director of Coaching Education for US Youth Soccer, Dr.
John Thomas, Assistant Director of Coaching Education for US Youth Soccer, Eddie
Henderson, Director of Coaching for United States Youth Soccer Nevada, Brett
Thompson, Director of Coaching and Education for Ohio South Youth Soccer and
Gary Williamson, Director of Coaching and Player Development, North Texas Youth
Soccer lead the segments of coaching techniques.
The Novice Coach begins with an introduction about coaching responsibilities and
the characteristics of the players. The series also contains a downloadable
guide that provides a more in depth look into coaching including a game day
checklist, information on injury prevention and formations.
Parental
involvement is discussed with tips on how to gain the support of parents and for
coaching your own child. The team management section covers the philosophy of
coaching, parent-coach meetings and the importance of sideline ethics.
Coaches will
learn how to organize and conduct proper training sessions. Through live
training sessions for each age group, find out what equipment you need, what the
players are looking for and how to best utilize your assistant coaches. Coaches
will receive ideas for how to format your training sessions and great tips for
how to keep the kids interested. Best practices for pre-game and post-game are
also covered.
Based on the success of the first title, US Youth Soccer members will greatly
benefit from this valuable tool. The US Youth Soccer Coaching Education
Department, in conjunction with the Recreation and Coaching committees, are
proud to add to the growing resources for youth coaches.
